Mosquito Table, Model 535
Wim Rietveld
Designed by Wim Rietveld for Gispen in 1953, the Model 535 — better known as the "Mosquito" Table (dutch: "Mug") — is a celebrated example of Dutch mid-century modern design. Its distinctive tripod base, formed from slender steel rods, gives the table a light and graceful appearance reminiscent of an insect’s delicate legs. A circular glass top appears to float above the elegant steel structure, while a small metal shelf beneath provides a subtle functional detail and visual balance. The combination of transparency, refined proportions, and minimal use of materials creates a design that feels both practical and remarkably lightweight. The MUG 535 reflects Rietveld’s belief that furniture should be functional, economical, and beautifully resolved. By using bent steel rod construction and simple industrial materials, he achieved a timeless design that remains as relevant today as when it was first introduced.
